Located in downtown Columbus, the National Veterans Memorial and Museum offers a unique experience for the heritage traveler. Established by an act of U.S. Congress, the museum stands alone as the only site dedicated to the experience of veterans from all branches of military service. The building itself features a modern design that emerges from the hillside overlooking the Scioto River and provides an excellent view of downtown Columbus. A Memorial Grove sits next to the museum offering a place for quiet reflection amidst Elm trees and cascading waterfalls.

Once inside, the visitor is treated to a variety of artifacts used by soldiers in America’s conflicts, both historic and recent. Examples range from a Civil War battle flag, clothing and helmets, field radio equipment from the Vietnam War, to a display of the evolution of military firearms. Other items provide glimpses into the personal experiences of soldiers with displays of zippo lighters, combs, and even a set of “trench checkers” designed for use in World War I. Throughout the first floor, a detailed timeline of America’s wars wraps along the wall providing education and context to the many exhibits.

Even more impressive than the architecture and artifacts is the museum’s dedication to telling the stories of veterans themselves. In some cases, interactive touchscreen exhibits offer a chance to read letters sent home while others feature veteran voices through audio and video interviews.

There is also a private room where veterans can record their own experiences. These recordings are then collected by the museum and could even make their way into future exhibits.

From artifacts for military enthusiasts to interactive exhibits for younger students, the National Veterans Memorial and Museum has something for everyone. The overall experience engenders a feeling of reflection and respect for military veterans, while at the same time engaging our interests and informing the public. The museum’s high-quality exhibits and strength of purpose make it a must-see for the Ohio traveler.
