Founded in 1987, the Motts Military Museum is located about twenty minutes south of Columbus in Groveport. Visitors to the museum will experience a truly vast collection, with military objects literally covering every wall of the facility. Each object is explained with a placard, and the museum covers multiple conflicts including Western frontier wars, the Civil War, the Spanish American War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and Desert Storm. Many special exhibits; even topics such as POWs or Women in the Military, plus a particularly powerful exhibit on the Holocaust. The objects featured match the variety of topics covered, with rifles, swords, uniforms, flight suits, letters, captured objects, photographs, and many other examples available for viewing. The outside of the museum offers even more to the visitor, with several restored military vehicles. This area features a selection of tanks, helicopters (including a Cobra attack helicopter used in Vietnam), cannons, howitzers, and a very rare “Higgins” landing boat used in the Pacific Theater in World War II. Finally, visitors are invited to walk through a replica, complete with personal artifacts, of the boyhood home of Columbus native and WWI ace Eddie Rickenbacher.
